OHI’s Free Health Insurance Education Sessions

HIM_LogoFinalThe Outreach and Enrollment Department of OHI is hosting four free health insurance education sessions this October at the Toms River Library, 101 Washington St., Toms River, N.J., in preparation for the 2016 open enrollment in the Affordable Care Act.

OHI outreach and enrollment associates Carmen Lopez and Sasha Andino along with representatives from several insurance companies will explain what to expect during the upcoming open enrollment period. Enrollment for 2016 begins November 1, 2015, and ends January 31, 2016. All sessions are open to the public, and no registration is needed.
Presentations from insurance companies will begin promptly.

October 5, 2015, 3:00 to 5:00 p.m., Health Republic Insurance of New Jersey

October 7, 2015, 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., AmeriHealth New Jersey

October 26, 2015, 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., Oscar Insurance Corporation of New Jersey

OHI Outreach Free Insurance Sessions (oct 2015 dates)

Important Dates for 2016 Enrollment: Plans and prices for 2016 will be available to preview the third week of October 2015. Open enrollment in a 2016 Marketplace plan begins November 1, 2015, and coverage can start as soon as January 1, 2016. December 15, 2015, is the last day to enroll in or change plans for new coverage that begins January 1, 2016.

On January 1, 2016, coverage starts for those who enroll or change plans by December 15. January 15, 2016, is the last day to enroll in or change plans for new coverage to start February 1, 2016. Open Enrollment ends January 31, 2016. Enrollments or changes between January 16 and January 31 take effect March 1, 2016. If you don’t enroll in a 2016 plan by January 31, 2016, you cannot enroll in a health insurance plan for 2016 unless you qualify for a Special Enrollment Period.

OHI to Host Press Conference on the ACA and the Accomplishments of OHI, This Friday, Oct. 24

Dr. Theresa Berger, CEO of Ocean Health Initiatives, with headquarters in Lakewood, and Lakewood - Skychairwoman of the board of trustees of NJPCA (New Jersey Primary Care Association) has announced that Jackie Cornell-Bechelli, regional director of Health and Human Services, Region II, (New York, New Jersey, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands) will hold a press conference at OHI, 101 Second Street, Lakewood, Friday, October 24, 2014, at 2:00 p.m.

Cornell-Bechelli will talk about the Affordable Care Act, Open Enrollment, the role of FQHCs, and such highlights of OHI as the opening of OHI’s Manchester site, Patient Centered Medical Home recognition, and the opening of the Clifton Avenue Grade School’s School Based Wellness Program.

Members of the media; Jorge Rod, the chairman of OHI’s Board of Directors; Dr. Gilbert Fleischer, OHI’s CMO (Chief Medical Officer) and the staff of OHI will be present. Following the press conference, Cornell-Bechelli will tour the Lakewood OHI site.

Cornell-Bechelli, who was appointed by Sylvia M. Burwell, Secretary of the U.S. Department of HHS, serves as a key representative of Secretary Burwell in working with federal, state, territorial, local, and tribal officials on health and social service issues, including implementation of the Affordable Care Act.


OHI to Participate in Mexican Consulate Health Fair 2014

10443213_763602430379205_7878088298222931064_oOcean Health Initiatives (OHI) a federally qualified health center, is partnering with the Mexican Consulate of Philadelphia, to host the health fair “Salud es Movimiento” (Health Is Movement) Saturday, October 18, 2014, at the Lakewood Middle School, 755 Somerset Avenue, in Lakewood, N.J. from 9:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

OHI will be offering blood pressure and glucose screenings, providing dental health material and distributing information about its medical services in Ocean County.

OHI’s outreach and enrollment team for Health Insurance Marketplace will be available with information about upcoming open enrollment and other opportunities for health insurance. The 40-foot, handicapped accessible, mobile medical unit will be parked outside for the glucose testing.

The Mexican Consulate of Philadelphia, which also covers Ocean County, NJ, is hosting the health fair to promote healthy habits for the entire community, including the Mexican and Hispanic communities.

Health Insurance Eligibility is Available for Select Situations

OHI would like to remind you that some individuals and families may still be eligible to enroll in health insurance.  Even though the formal open enrollment period has closed, our Outreach and Enrollment Department is available to assist our patients and the public with any questions about the Health Exchange.

Special Open Enrollment in the Marketplace is available up to 60 days AFTER the following events have occurred:Bigger-Family

  • Those who are recently married
  • Had or adopted a child
  • Had a change in immigration status
  • Have been released from incarceration
  • Received an exemption from the Marketplace but now have a higher income
  • Anyone who lost health insurance because of:

– Leaving or losing a job
– Moving into New Jersey or moving from another part of New Jersey
– Divorce
– Turning 26 years of age and lost coverage on a parents plan
– Lost eligibility for Medicaid or CHIP

These life-changing situations allow people to participate in this special enrollment period; however, it is important to remember that you must enroll within 60 days after the event occurred.

People who can enroll ALL year include:

  • Anyone eligible for Medicaid or have a child who is eligible for CHIP (Children’s Health Insurance Plan)
  • A small business owner who wants to offer coverage to employees
  • Native American or Alaskan native

OHI Extends Its Hours for Open Enrollment Appointments

With the deadline to enroll in health insurance looming, OHI (Ocean Health Initiatives), is extending the hours of its Open Enrollment Help Days in Lakewood, Toms River, and Manahawkin to accommodate the growing need of the general public and OHI patients to enroll in health insurance through the Affordable Care Act.2-21-14 - Extended Hours

Bilingual Certified Application Counselors in the OHI Health Exchange Marketplace department will be available by appointment only through March 31, 2014 as follows:

1. Toms River, 301 Lakehurst Road:
Monday – Thursday: 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.
Friday: 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

2. Lakewood, 101 Second Street:
Monday: 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
Tuesday – Thursday: 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.
Friday: 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.
Saturday: 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

3. Manahawkin at 333 Haywood Road:
Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday: 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Tuesday: 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.

Dr. Berger and Beatriz Patino to Appear on Spanish-Speaking Television

Enrique Teutelo - Beatriz Patino - Theresa BergerDr. Theresa Berger, CEO of Ocean Health Initiatives (OHI), a federally qualified health care center (FQHC) with locations in Lakewood, Toms River, and Manahawkin, and Beatriz Patino, OHI’s Health Exchange Coordinator, can be seen December 1, 2013, on the Spanish-speaking television station Univision Communications Inc., Channel 17*, at 7:30 a.m.

Enrique Teutelo, a newscaster at Univision, interviews Dr. Berger and Patino about OHI, the services offered to underinsured and uninsured individuals; how OHI can help people sign up for health insurance during the open enrollment period, October through March; and how to determine which plans would be best for their individual situations.

OHI has established a Health Exchange Marketplace Department to assist the public in understanding information about affordable health insurance coverage in advance of the Affordable Care Act, which begins on January 1, 2014.

Beatriz Patino - Theresa Berger (TV)Dr. Berger, who is bilingual in Spanish and English, has been the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of OHI since April 2003. Under her leadership, OHI has opened additional sites in Toms River and Manahawkin, has added a dental department, and 2 school based programs.

Patino, has served as a community health worker in the Central Jersey Health Consortium, Lakewood and North Brunswick. There she performed community outreach for such groups as the VNA, WIC, Women’s Wellness Centers, hospital clinics, OBGYN offices, and several resource centers. Patino earned a B.A. in political science from Kean University in 2005 and anticipates earning her Masters of Social Work Clinical Practice with Families and Children in 2016 from Kean University.

OHI to offer flu shots at Health Fair, Georgian Court University

OHI (Ocean Health Initiatives), a federally qualified health care center, with locations in Lakewood, Toms River, and Manahawkin is offering flu shots during a Healthy Campus Health Fair, Tuesday, November 12 from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., at the Casino, Georgian Court University, 900 Lakewood Avenue, Lakewood. No appointments are required.

Most insurances are accepted. For those without insurance, flu shots cost $20.00 for the regular vaccine. The cost of flu shots are payable with cash or checks. Anyone receiving a flu shot must have a photo I.D.

OHI will provide information about its services and staff from the Health Exchange Department will help students understand how to navigate the New Jersey Health Exchange Marketplace.
