A Message for Latino Community Members of Ocean County

Ocean County Prosecutor Joe Coronato announces the release of the Office’s latest educational video. This video was created for the· Latino Community Members of Ocean County. Concerns from this segment of the community were voiced at one of the Prosecutor’s Community Leaders Meetings. It was brought to the Prosecutor’s attention that Latino Community Members were not seeking medical attention for themselves or their loved ones when in need. It was also stated that these same Community Members were not reporting crimes to the police when they were victimized and were also not reporting vital information to the police when they witnessed a crime.

After listening to the concerns from the Latino Community Leaders, the Prosecutor formed a committee that was headed up by himself and Chief of Detectives Glen Miller. After meeting on the issue several times it was learned that the Latino Community Members had a common fear that they would be questioned and deported if they had any contact with medical professionals or the police. With careful research a video was created to dispel those fears so that these valued community members could seek the help that they needed for themselves or their children and loved ones without a constant fear that they would be sent out of the country.

The video highlights situations in which these community members would be questioned about their immigration status which could result in deportation. The video does reveal that in most situations in which a Latino Community Member would be seeking assistance from medical professionals or the police, they would not have any reason to fear deportation or questioning that would result in that. It’s goal is to ease those fears amongst Latino Community Members so they will seek and ultimately receive the help that they need when times of trouble arise.

Prosecutor Coronate would like to express his thanks to the committee for all of its time and dedication to this project. He would also like to send out a sincere thank you to all of the members of the Latino Community who contributed and assisted with the creation of this Educational Community Film.
