OHI to Host Information Sessions for Colorectal Cancer

Ocean Health Initiatives (OHI), a federally qualified health center (FQHC), is hosting Colorectal Cancer Information Sessions at the Brick Health Center, 1608 Route 88, Suite 207, Brick, on Thursday, March 15th; Lakewood Health Center, 101 Second Street, Lakewood, on Monday, March 19th; and at the Toms River Health Center, 301 Lakehurst Road, Toms River, on Tuesday, March 20th. The information sessions, which start at 1:00 p.m. and go until 4:00 p.m., are in recognition of Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month which takes place in March.
Included in the information sessions will be a model Fecal Immunochemical Test (FIT) Kit for display, educational materials about the risks of colorectal cancer and the opportunity to ask questions. The Fit screen kit is a non-invasive test that looks for hidden blood in the stool, which can be an early sign of cancer and precancerous polyps that can turn into cancer overtime. Samples are then sent to the lab for analysis and reviewed with your OHI provider at your scheduled appointment.
According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC) and the American Cancer Society, both men and women 50 years and older should get regular screenings for this highly preventable cancer. Colorectal cancer, one of the most common cancers in the United States, is the second leading cause of death in the U.S.
